About Me

I started my career in the industry as a Software Engineer at JP Morgan Chase & Co. after graduating from the University of Mumbai in 2017. Most of my learnings about project planning, estimation, good coding practices and testing come from my time there. One of the things which I enjoyed the most was debugging and finding bugs in production code which often got missed during testing in development.

I am a firm believer that Software Engineering is more than combining pieces of code together - it goes much beyond that. Designing a good software can often prevent future problems.
Software Engineering is like problem-solving for me with a sight on a multitude of things like usability, efficiency, security and being smart with the appropriate tools to list a few.

Currently I am in my final semester of my Masters from Virginia Tech. Set to graduate in the summer of 2021, I am open to Full-Time Software Development Engineering opportunities. Please feel free to reach out to me at malabika at vt DOT edu if you have any questions!

Education

MS in Computer Science

Aug 2019 - May 2021
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

I work with Dr. T. M. Murali and his Research group to identify problems in BioInformatics and solve them. My Masters thesis focuses on identifying the host-microbiome-parasite interaction in the gut of honey bees in response to the experimental exposure to Nosema parasite.

During the course of my Masters degree, I have worked on projects in NLP, Data Science, and Deep Learning.

BE in Computer Engineering

2013 - 2017
University of Mumbai

My Bachelors thesis involved working on Anaphora Resolution which is one of the prime tasks in Information Retrieval.

Experiences

Software Engineer

Jul 2017 - Jul 2019
JP Morgan Chase & Co., Mumbai, India

Worked for Rates Athena Global Engineering Business under Corporate Investment Business Line of Business

  • A core member of a project responsible for migrating a trade-transaction data object from the main production database into an ancillary database. This activity helped stabilize the growing production database due to a high volume of trades and relieved off 10% of space. Redesigned existing processes and jobs (>35) to incorporate the change and test them. Also helped in migrating 2 of the most widely used applications in the Rates business.

  • Helped my team onboard a new set of applications and business processes. Primary owner of one of the most used onboarded application and deal with the requirements and enhancements related to it.

  • Part of JP Morgan’s Force For Good 2017 initiative as an Application Developer for SaNiSa. SaNiSa has been one of the two projects out of the 22 Force For Good projects from India which was selected to represent JP Morgan in the Nasscom CSR Conference 2018.

  • Lead for the Rates Ed program which is an initiative to help in the knowledge transfer of the different technologies and business information to all the technologists in the Rates Business spread across Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad in India.

Projects

A ToDo List Single Page Application using MERN stack - A Single Page App (SPA) built with Express, Mongo DB and Node which uses REST APIs to manage a ToDo List to add, update, read and delete tasks.
Performance of Supervised Classifiers on Mouse Cell Atlas single-cell RNA Sequencing Data for Cell Annotation - Benchmarked 2 supervised classification algorithms - SVM and ACTINN for cell-type identification of a mouse dataset to understand cell-lineage and tracing. Analyzed more than 200K mouse cells spread over 42 tissue types.
Netflix Movie Recommendation System - A content-based filtering recommendation system for Netflix movies based on cosine-similarity of TF-IDF vectorization of movie description
Chaakri - An app and an admin website for an NGO SaNiSa to streamline the supply of their food products and manage resources efficiently. Was one of 2 projects from 22 projects in JPMorgan to be showcased in Nasscom CSR Conference 2018. Estimated order capture and volume predicted to be around 3800kg of products worth Rs.100K compared to the earlier 2500kg at Rs.65K
